Karpaz, a magical land where legends and dreams intertwine, as if stepped out of a fairy tale.

THE KARPAZ PENINSULA, A FORGOTTEN TALE OF THE MEDITERRANEAN

THE KARPAZ PENINSULA, A FORGOTTEN TALE OF THE MEDITERRANEAN

In the northeast of Cyprus lies a long, slender stretch of land reaching out toward the blue of the sea: Karpaz… It is a hidden corner that has managed to remain apart from the frantic pace of the world—a place where nature continues to tell its own story.

As you make your way toward Karpaz, you are accompanied by olive trees lining the road, vast, stretching fields, and small villages. As the noise of the cities fades into the distance, the sound of the wind becomes ever more distinct. Before long, you begin to feel that you are traveling not merely to another place, but into another world—one where time flows at a slower, gentler pace.

A HIDDEN PARADISE BY THE SEA

A HIDDEN PARADISE BY THE SEA

One of the most enchanting destinations in Karpaz is the stretch of coastline known as the Golden Sands. Here, beaches that take on a golden hue under the sunlight meet the turquoise sea, extending as far as the eye can see. If you arrive at the shore in the early morning, you will find little more than the traces left behind by the waves.

These shores do not belong to humans alone. Two significant species of Mediterranean sea turtles—*Caretta caretta* and Chelonia mydas—come to these suitable beaches to lay their eggs. Emerging onto the sand in the silence of the night, these creatures are part of a life cycle that nature has sustained for thousands of years.

Perhaps this is the greatest beauty of Karpaz: here, one senses that nature continues to live by its own rules.

LANDS WHWRW DONKEYS ROAM FREELY

LANDS WHWRW DONKEYS ROAM FREELY

When one thinks of Karpaz, one of the images that comes to mind is that of donkeys wandering along the roads and across the countryside. These animals, now synonymous with the peninsula, have become one of the region’s iconic symbols.

An encounter with a donkey—appearing suddenly during your journey—might prompt you to slow down your vehicle and view your surroundings through a different lens. It is as if Karpaz is reminding you not to rush, and that a road is more than just a path to a destination.

It is best to observe these animals from afar, maintaining a safe distance so as not to disturb them. After all, the true beauty of Karpaz lies in the fact that humans and other living creatures can share the same landscape.

CAPE ZAFER, WHERE THE WORLD ENDS

CAPE ZAFER, WHERE THE WORLD ENDS

As you move toward the tip of the peninsula, settlements grow sparse, the landscape opens up, and the sea reveals itself in all its splendor. At Cape Zafer, an indescribable feeling takes hold: on one side, the Mediterranean, appearing truly infinite; on the other, a coastline sculpted by the wind.

Standing here and gazing toward the horizon, you come to understand why the Karpaz region is so special. It is more than just a geographical point at the edge of a map—it is a place where one can truly be alone with one’s own thoughts.

The sound of the wind, the rhythm of waves breaking against the shore, and the shifting colors of the sky become the simplest, yet most powerful, memories of this journey.

APOSTOLOS ANDREAS MONASTERY IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF A LEGENT

APOSTOLOS ANDREAS MONASTERY IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF A LEGENT

According to legend, the Apostle Andrew arrived on the shores of Karpaz by ship during his travels. When the vessel ran out of fresh water, he stepped ashore and struck a rock with his staff; immediately, fresh water gushed forth. It is believed that this water healed a sailor suffering from vision problems.

For centuries, people have journeyed here—not only to pray, but also to bring their wishes and hopes. One of the most poignant stories associated with the monastery tells of a mother who, having searched for her lost son for years, was finally reunited with him—a miracle she attributed to her faith in Saint Andrew. While the historical accuracy of this account remains unverified, the story continues to live on within the memory of the monastery.

WHO IS PASSING THROUGH THE MONASTERY GATE TODAY?

WHO IS PASSING THROUGH THE MONASTERY GATE TODAY?

On the path leading to the monastery today, one might encounter people carrying different stories. Some come to pray in silence, others to seek traces of the past, and some simply to experience the tranquility of this historic structure by the seaside.

While some visitors light candles and make wishes, others examine the stone walls and the old chapel. Even those who arrive to take photographs may, after a while, find themselves listening to the sound of the sea and surrendering to the silence.

Perhaps this is precisely what makes the Apostolos Andreas Monastery so special: everyone comes here for a different reason, yet everyone leaves a piece of themselves behind.
