Erhürman and Christodoulides come together at the Pile Peace Festival: Music, culture, and friendship take center stagePILE – October 17, 2026

Tufan Erhürman, representing the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, and Nikos Christodoulides, leader of the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus, met at the 6th PILE Peace Festival held in Pyla (Pile). The event, which took place in Pyla—a village where both communities live side by side—was notable for its focus on cultural exchange and intercommunal communication.
The festival, organized through the collaboration of the Turkish and Greek Cypriot local administrations (mukhtar offices) of Pyla and the United Nations Peacekeeping Force’s Pyla office, was attended by numerous citizens from both communities, as well as political representatives and other invited guests.

As part of the festival, Tufan Erhürman and Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides sat at the same table, sharing a meal and engaging in conversation. The two leaders also watched the speeches and cultural performances held during the event together.
The program featured performances by both Turkish and Greek Cypriot musical groups, as well as folk dance displays involving participants from both communities. These musical and cultural activities provided a shared space for the attendees who gathered at the festival venue.

The festival held in PILE—a village where Turks and Greek Cypriots live side by side—has once again highlighted the importance of the two communities interacting in daily life and preserving their cultural ties.
The attendance of both leaders at the same social event is seen as a notable development for intercommunal communication and dialogue in Cyprus. However, the extent to which this encounter at the festival might influence the resolution of political issues will only become clear through the steps taken in the period ahead.
While showcasing the unifying power of music and culture, the PILE Peace Festival has also brought renewed attention to aspirations for peace, mutual understanding, and a culture of coexistence on the island.
